OXFAM GB has, like many other agencies, grappled with how to make this shift and has found the SLA a useful tool to facilitate their understanding of vulnerable communities and their thinking. This SLSA shares how the SLA has helped the organisation to develop a better conceptual understanding of chronic food and livelihoods insecurity. Our thanks to Maxime Houinato and Craig Castro for their willingness to share this ‘work in progress’.</description> <dc:publisher>No publisher</dc:publisher> <dc:creator>Rahel</dc:creator> <dc:rights></dc:rights> <dc:subject>SLSA</dc:subject> <dc:subject>Newsletter</dc:subject> <dc:subject>Sustainable Livelihoods Approach</dc:subject> <dc:date>2009-03-10T12:13:32Z</dc:date> <dc:type>publicationFile</dc:type> </item>

Whilst the focus of Reflect tends to remain on literacy conceived within a wider framework of communication and power, it argues that it can also be a thread woven through the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach (SLA) and a guiding tool to systematise thinking about the location of literacy in people’s daily lives. If the relevant entry points are found, it can help ensure that any intervention will be more effective in enabling participants to become protagonists in their own lives. </description> <dc:publisher>No publisher</dc:publisher> <dc:creator>Rahel</dc:creator> <dc:rights></dc:rights> <dc:subject>Sustainable Livelihoods Approach</dc:subject> <dc:subject>SLSA</dc:subject> <dc:subject>Newsletter</dc:subject> <dc:subject>Action Research</dc:subject> <dc:subject>Action Learning</dc:subject> <dc:date>2008-11-08T14:17:03Z</dc:date> <dc:type>File</dc:type> </item>

The sustainable livelihoods approach (SLA) puts people at the centre of development but also recognises the importance of transforming institutions and structures - especially the various levels of government, the private sector and other non government organisations which have a profound effect upon people’s livelihoods. Decentralising some of these elements can contribute to developing sustainable livelihoods if the process brings the management and delivery of services closer to the people and strengthens the links between government and citizens. It underlies approaches to responsive service delivery, to a development planning approach based on local planning, and to helping communities plan and manage their own development.</description> <dc:publisher>No publisher</dc:publisher> <dc:creator>Rahel</dc:creator> <dc:rights></dc:rights> <dc:subject>SLSA</dc:subject> <dc:subject>Newsletter</dc:subject> <dc:subject>Rethinking Governance</dc:subject> <dc:subject>Learning and Sharing</dc:subject> <dc:date>2009-04-23T13:58:49Z</dc:date> <dc:type>publicationFile</dc:type> </item>

It was written by Siobhan Kelly of FAO’s Livelihoods Support Programme. In November 2004 FAO’s Livelihood Support Programme and some of its partners came together to look at examples of livelihoods projects to understand what works and what doesn’t work and how to improve their operations, impact and scaling-up. Three case studies from this workshop are highlighted in this issue. What emerges from this is the usefulness of looking at things from a livelihoods perspective in order to understand the complexities of livelihoods, and the importance of moving towards concrete livelihood interventions.</description> <dc:publisher>No publisher</dc:publisher> <dc:creator>Rahel</dc:creator> <dc:rights></dc:rights> <dc:subject>SLSA</dc:subject> <dc:subject>Newsletter</dc:subject> <dc:subject>Learning and Sharing</dc:subject> <dc:date>2008-11-08T14:13:54Z</dc:date> <dc:type>publicationFile</dc:type> </item>
