10 Years of Learning and Innovation
A decade of contributing to Community-driven Development and Sustainable Livelihoods
The African Institute for Community-Driven Development (Khanya-aicdd) has launched its Annual Report, which profiles a decade of landmark contributions to Community-driven development and Sustainable Livelihoods across Africa. The Annual Report highlights Khanya-aicdd’s accomplishments since 1998, and draws useful lessons that will carry the Institute into the next decade.
The core of the Institute’s experience is based on development planning and since inception, they have consistently worked with partners to enhance community-based service delivery and planning mechanisms in Africa. For instance, through facilitating effective partnerships in Uganda, Zimbabwe, Ghana and South Africa, Khanya-aicdd and partners collectively developed an approach to community-based planning which is now national policy in South Africa and Uganda. It has also been applied in several districts in Zimbabwe.
Khanya-aicdd was at the forefront of designing and implementing a research initiative on ‘Building Sustainable Livelihoods’ that has lead to policy change for South Africa’s Department of Social Development. In terms of process facilitation, Khanya-aicdd has been instrumental in facilitating several national policy frameworks and guidelines, namely the National Community Development Policy Framework, The National Framework on Public Participation and National Guidelines to establish Local Economic Development Agencies, all in South Africa. The Annual Report gives more detail on these, and a host of other accomplishments by Khanya-aicdd and partners.
The institute’s work is embodied in providing services to facilitate change in development planning, rethinking governance, local economic development, agriculture, natural resources and food security. As a result, the institute has accumulated extensive experience, knowledge and skills in these areas and has made significant contributions to shaping and influencing development systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. Specific services offered by Khanya-aicdd comprise strategic planning and process facilitation for development organisations, action research, monitoring and evaluation, sharing, learning and training.
