Khanya-aicdd hosts a seminar on governance in Africa
On 29th January, 2009 - Khanya-aicdd held the first in a series of seminars scheduled for 2009 entitled ‘Is there a crisis of governance in Southern Africa? If so whose crisis and whose responsibility?’
The seminar aimed to bring the critical issue of governance into the public arena with a view to stimulating debate and rigorous discussion on the ‘apparent’ crisis of governance in southern Africa. As an institute that emphasises action learning, the seminar had the parallel aims of raising awareness about Khanya-aicdd’s approach to Rethinking Governance, as well as deepening its own understanding on this issue from the insights of other people.
While the debate was conventional and also controversial, it proved to be a good way to start to reflect on the challenges faced by those committed to making development work for the poor. The key inputs at the seminar were delivered by authoritative voices in the sector, namely Dr. Vincent Hungwe, Khanya-aicdd’s Rethinking Governance Practice Manager; Andile Mngxitama, co-editor of the recently released book entitled “Biko Lives! Contesting the Legacy of Steve Biko” and Dr. Ian Goldman, Chief Executive Officer, Khanya-aicdd, who also chaired the event.
The seminar coincided with another Khanya-aicdd reflective event (Strengthening Management for Impact) which brought together partners from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Ethiopia and the Netherlands. Participants contributed to a robust debate and certainly added value through bringing continental perspectives into the deliberations.
