South Africa pilots the CBW System

In South Africa, a number of partners were involved in piloting and testing one of the models.

  • In Limpopo province four partners were involved - three of whom tested the model in HIV/AIDS project environments. These were  CHOICE Trust, Kodumela Area Development Project, and Nlhayiso. The fourth partner (Ramalema Environmental Protection) worked with volunteers on clean environment issues. CHOICE focussed on home-based care givers and coordinators who manage the care givers. It is working with relevant stakeholders e.g. traditional birth attendants and churches to improve coordination and collaboration.
  • In the Free State, two partners were involved. The Thaba Nchu Food Security project implemented the 5 -15 hour unpaid model. 15 CBWs were recruited and were supported by two field facilitators with crop and animal specialisation. The project assisted smallholder farmers and producers to improve and increase production. The other project, Golang Batcha, piloted the 20-30 hours (paid a stipend) model on HIV/AIDS and uses home-based carers to support patients in 7 health centres in the Bloemfontein township.
